Our Approach to Clothing Optional Sauna Culture in London.
For the past three years our late evening clothing optional sessions at Sweheat Sauna have been part of our wider exploration of authentic sauna culture in London.
As many of our regular guests know, textile-free sauna traditions are normal across large parts of Europe and are deeply connected to relaxation, body neutrality, wellbeing, and communal respect. We continue to believe there is value in creating spaces where people can experience sauna in a more traditional and uninhibited way.
However, after careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue our regular 9pm clothing optional sessions.
This decision has been made to protect the atmosphere, comfort, and culture that we want
Sweheat Sauna to represent. Over time, these sessions began attracting a small number of attendees whose intentions did not align with the respectful wellness-focused environment we work hard to create.
Our priority has always been to provide a safe, grounded, and welcoming community space centred around authentic sauna practice, cold exposure, connection, and wellbeing. Maintaining that environment is more important than continuing any individual format or session type.
Importantly, this does not mean we are moving away from textile-free sauna culture altogether.
We will continue to host textile-free Aufguss experiences where appropriate. These sessions are guided, structured, and rooted in traditional European sauna rituals, creating a very different atmosphere from open-format late evening sessions. Textile-free Aufguss remains an important part of authentic sauna culture, and we know many guests value the sense of freedom, equality, and presence these rituals can create.
For those unfamiliar with Aufguss, it is a sauna ritual originating from Central and Northern
Europe involving heat, steam, essential oils, music, and towel techniques led by a trained sauna master. At Sweheat Sauna, our Aufguss ceremonies are designed to create a deeply immersive and communal wellness experience.
As sauna culture continues to grow across the UK, we believe it is important to help shape it intentionally. Respect, consent, body neutrality, and community wellbeing must remain at the centre of any textile-free sauna environment.
We are incredibly grateful to the many guests who approached these sessions with openness, warmth, and respect, and we look forward to continuing to build a healthier and more authentic sauna culture in London together.
